Rhythms and Venetian colors |
|
"The artistic style of Jean-Louis Sébastien is recognizable from afar. It is constant, lyrical, generous and unquestionable. His painting seems to be built upon heat and sand, finished without further call. And over the passage of time, Jean-Louis Sébastien has developed an expressive plastic language which is exclusively his own. The material is sumptuous, worked with an astonishing suppleness which sometimes suggests a draping, or a blossoming out in great marbled waves with modulated transparencies. The colouring is expressed in strong values, placed into contrast by bold reconciliations. The forms are not closed, but most often fragmented like ripe fruits, engraved in the playing of foregrounds open to mysterious depths.
The last paintings of Jean-Louis Sébastien are a rediscovery of the glowing colours of the Baux de Provence, with both new lighting and new writing. These are living paintings which Sébastien wants us to be able to touch with our fingertips. And with this same momentum of passion, his richly-coloured floral compositions – both lively and spontaneous, and always treated as an overture – allow us to travel even further into the interval between representational and non-representational art. Each time that he approaches a subject, it becomes both a cause and a pretext specific to his emotional impulses. The latest book by Jean-Louis Sébastien, “L'armure de couleurs” (The Pattern of Colours), printed in March of 2004, is still available on order at the price of 35€. Jean-Louis Sébastien was born on the 26th of May, 1946 in Saintes, in the Charente Maritime. Since 1970, he has exhibited his works regularly in Anjou. Since then, he has exhibited throughout France and other countries and participated in the major French Permanent exhibition Jean-Louis Sébastien :
